Getting back into the grove of things

Results of the Tour de Fleece 2013.

I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish. Total spinning time was just over 23 hours for the month.

The merino skein is from fleece that Ted Myatt gave us.

The Polypay is some washed fleece we got when we picked up a white alpaca fleece from Wendy of Lady Slipper Alpacas.

The skeins from silk hankies are test skeins for a larger shawl project. I have 62g of richly dyed silk hankies I’ll be turning into a lace shawl. These skeins were testing spinning the hankies on my wheel, which I hadn’t done before. I drafted then at the wheel, rather than predrafting beforehand. I then chain plyed them for a final yarn of about 25-30 WPI.

batt_groupart_batt_yarn
I made the art fibre batt at the Ontario Handspinning Seminar back in June. I split the batt into four strips, drafted it a bit and then spun it fairly thick. I then chain plyed it for a nice worsted weight yarn.

I’m pretty please with how the corespun yarn come out. This is half of the fibre that I prepared for it.

I’m thinking of using the rest of the fibre in another project.

5 Counties Seminar
The 5 Counties Seminar is a one day seminar for the spinning guilds of Southern Ontario.

Part of the seminar is the guild challenge. This year it is creating an item inspired by a ceramic teapot. Each guild is given a picture of a different teapot to be inspired by. My guild’s is a pot by Canadian artist Paul Mathieu. A teapot very similar to the one we are working from can be found here.

I’m using the quilt squares and some of the colours as the inspiration for my piece. I’m going to make a scarf of mitred squares. It will likely be in sport weight chain plyed yarns. I’m planning on using some of the fibre from the corespinning challenge mentioned above as accent colours and use other larger boxes of fibre for the main colours.

I’ll post pictures as I have more sample yarns and have started the knitting.
